Unlocking the Japanese Saving Secret: The Kakebo Budgeting System
Over the years, I’ve tried countless budgeting techniques but none of them helped as much as the secret Japanese saving strategy I learned. It all started when I traveled to Japan and discovered their exceptional ability to save money. In the 60s, Japan had a savings rate of 28.7 percent, compared to the US’s 17 percent. After chatting with locals, I learned about the simple Japanese saving technique called kakebo, which has been transforming lives for the past 119 years.
How Does Kakebo Work?
Kakebo takes a monthly approach to budgeting. Here’s how it works:
- Calculate your monthly income, including take-home pay and additional streams of income.
- Calculate your monthly fixed expenses, such as rent, mortgage, utility bills, and debt payments.
- Set a savings target for the month based on the amount left after fixed expenses.
- Calculate the remaining available income for the month.
- Divide the available income by the number of days in the month to determine daily spending limits.
Tracking Expenses
It’s crucial to track expenses by categorizing them as needs, wants, cultural expenses, or unexpected expenses. Keeping a detailed tracker and reflecting on your spending habits helps you identify areas where you might be overspending and find ways to improve.
Reflection and Improvement
At the end of each month, ask yourself how much money you have, how much you’d like to save, how much you’re spending, and how you can improve. This reflection maintains progress toward saving goals and helps you make better spending decisions.
The Japanese Saving Mindset
In Japan, employees receive a significant portion of their income in the form of bonuses, which are treated separately from their regular salary. This mental accounting encourages saving or investing the bonus amounts instead of treating them as regular income. Additionally, the preference for using cash in Japan allows for more conscious tracking of spending.
Conclusion
Incorporating the Kakebo budgeting system, adopting a savings mindset, and tracking expenses can help anyone achieve financial freedom. It’s essential to start small, form saving habits, and reflect on spending patterns for long-term success. While Kakebo may not work for everyone, it provides valuable insights into Japanese saving strategies that can be adapted to individual financial goals.
