Turkey’s future: A shift towards the East or West?

The History and Future of Turkey: An Overview

Turkey, a country that has straddled the East and West for centuries, has recently been making headlines. With a rich history that includes being the capital of the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman Empire, Turkey has experienced numerous transformations that have shaped its identity and relationships with other nations.

One of the most famous monuments in Turkey, the Hagia Sophia, has experienced its own identity crisis over the years. Built as a church during the Byzantine Empire, it was later converted into a mosque when the Ottomans conquered Constantinople. Under the secular republic, it became a museum, but in recent years, the Turkish government has converted it back into a mosque, leading to much controversy and debate.

The politics of Turkey have also seen significant shifts. In 2023, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan secured a third term in office, surprising many. In the early years of Erdogan’s presidency, Turkey was seen as a model country, with a combination of democracy, moderate Islam, free market capitalism, and good relations with the West. However, in recent years, political rights and civil liberties have deteriorated in the country, leading to a rating of “not free” by American nonprofit Freedom House.

Turkey‘s foreign policy has also been a topic of discussion. While the country has historically been aligned with the West, recent years have seen a pivot towards Russia and Eurasia. This shift has been characterized as “strategic autonomy” by the Turkish government, and has LED to increased influence in regions such as the Middle East and North Africa.

The relationship between Turkey and the United States has also been strained, with conflicts over the arming of Kurdish rebel forces in Syria, as well as the presence of Fethullah Gulen, a Muslim cleric residing in the U.S. who is believed to be behind a failed coup against Erdogan in 2016. These tensions have LED to public perception in Turkey of the U.S. as a threat, along with other Western powers.

With a history that spans empires and alliances, it’s clear that Turkey‘s position in the global landscape is complex and ever-evolving. As the country continues to navigate its relationships with both Western and Eastern powers, the future of Turkey remains uncertain yet intriguing. Only time will tell how Turkey‘s rich history and political landscape will shape its standing in the world.
