Ingredients
For this recipe, you’ll need quality ground beef (80 to 85% lean, preferably ground chuck), breadcrumbs (panko style), milk, egg, onion, granulated garlic, kosher salt, ground black pepper, low sodium broth, Worcestershire sauce, cornstarch, tomato paste, and mushrooms.
Preparation
First, you’ll create a panade with the breadcrumbs and milk, and then add the grated onion and other seasonings to make the patties. The secret to tender patties is to mix the ingredients by hand without overworking the mixture. Shape the patties into oblong burger shapes and cook them in a frying pan until browned on both sides.
Creating the Mushroom Sauce
After removing the patties from the pan, you’ll use the same pan to sauté diced onions and sliced mushrooms. Then, you’ll add tomato paste and the magical liquid flavor bomb (a mixture of low sodium broth, Worcestershire sauce, and cornstarch). Let the sauce simmer and then nestle the patties back into the pan to cook all the way through.
Final Presentation
After simmering the patties in the mushroom sauce, it’s time to taste the delicious and healthy Salisbury steak. The mushroom sauce is poured over the patties and the dish is ready to be enjoyed.
