Understanding International Shipping Terms

Hello, it’s Alan from ABTS Training Services in London, England. In response to viewer requests, I’ve put together a video discussing international shipping terms.

Bunker Adjustment Factor (BAF) and Currency Adjustment Factor (CAF)

When a vessel goes on a voyage, it estimates the cost of fuel (bunkerage) based on a certain price per barrel. However, the actual price of fuel may differ, leading to a loss. To compensate for this fluctuation, the shipper may charge a percentage known as the Bunker Adjustment Factor. Similarly, the Currency Adjustment Factor compensates for fluctuations in currency exchange rates.

Liner Terms and Free In Free Out (FIO)

Liner terms include the loading and unloading of cargo to and from the vessel, while FIO is the opposite and is generally used in chartering.

Terminal Handling Charges (THC)

THC is the cost of handling cargo at a port. This charge is essential for the movement of containers and is necessary for the port to cover its operational expenses.

Understanding freight Rates for Containers

Full Container Load (FCL) refers to a shipping container that is fully utilized by one shipper. On the other hand, Less than Container Load (LCL) is when multiple shippers share a container. freight rates are calculated based on weight or measure, and it’s important to understand how these rates are determined by shipping lines.

Caution Against Unscrupulous Practices

It’s important to be cautious of freight forwarders who may add fictitious charges or inflate terminal handling fees. It’s recommended to check the legitimacy of these charges by referring to shipping line websites and port authorities. Additionally, it’s crucial to be aware of potential discrepancies in freight rates and to verify the charges to avoid exploitation.

Conclusion

Understanding shipping terms and freight rates is crucial for exporters and importers. By being vigilant and knowledgeable, businesses can ensure fair and transparent trading practices in the international shipping industry.
