The Journey of Rome Henderson

At just 13 years old, Rome Henderson has already gone through a remarkable journey. On January 1st, she received a life-saving heart transplant at Children’s Health in Dallas.

Early Health Challenges

At birth, Rome was diagnosed with an oversized hole in her heart, as well as some narrowing and a need for a valve replacement. She underwent her first surgery at just 3 days old and a second surgery at 6 months old.

Developing Heart Failure

Despite these early challenges, Rome initially managed well with oral medications to support her heart function. However, her health took a dramatic turn for the worse, leading to her transfer to Children’s Medical in Dallas on Christmas Eve.

The Impella Device

Upon her arrival, it became clear that Rome’s condition was critical, and she required more advanced support for her failing heart. She was placed on a ventilator and then received a left ventricular assist device called the Impella to stabilize her condition.

Waiting for a Transplant

While the Impella provided crucial support, it was only a temporary solution. Rome’s care team explained that she would need a heart transplant as soon as possible, but the timing was uncertain.

A New Chance

After an agonizing wait, Rome’s family received the incredible news that a heart was available. She underwent the transplant on the first day of the new year, marking a new beginning for Rome.

Recovery and Gratitude

Following the successful surgery, Rome made an impressive recovery. Her energy levels soared, and she was able to leave the hospital and enjoy a meal at her favorite restaurant, Olive garden.

Rome’s family expressed deep gratitude to her care team for their exceptional support and care throughout the entire journey. From the transplant coordinator to the nurses and therapists, each individual played a crucial role in Rome’s recovery.
