The Truth About Electric Cars: Part 1

Electric cars are making headlines with a 66% increase in sales, and some states even considering banning gas-powered vehicles. However, there are some inconvenient facts about electric cars that politicians and green activists may not fully understand.

Fact 1: Electric cars won’t make a significant impact on oil use

Despite the push for electric vehicles, physicist Mark Mills of the Manhattan Institute points out that even if the world had 300-500 million electric vehicles, it would only reduce world oil consumption by about 10%. This is because most oil is used for purposes other than personal vehicles, such as flying planes, driving buses, and powering mining equipment.

Fact 2: Electricity isn’t as green as it seems

While electric cars are often touted as being more sustainable for the environment, it’s important to consider where the electricity comes from. In the US, most electricity is generated from fossil fuels like natural gas and coal, with only 12% coming from wind and solar sources. This means that electric cars are not as “green” as they seem, as the electricity powering them is often derived from non-renewable, polluting sources.

Fact 3: Electric cars have a high carbon footprint

The process of mining and manufacturing the components of electric car batteries emits a significant amount of carbon dioxide. In fact, a study by Volkswagen revealed that electric cars emit more carbon dioxide in their first 60,000 miles of use than conventional vehicles. It’s only after owning an electric car for at least 100,000 miles that the reduced emissions begin to outweigh the initial carbon footprint.

In our next article, we’ll delve into more inconvenient facts about electric cars, debunking assumptions about their batteries and the electric grid.
