Cubic Zirconia vs Swarovski vs Czech Crystal
What is Cubic Zirconia?
Cubic Zirconia, commonly known as CZ, is a synthetic material used as a diamond substitute in jewelry. It has a cubic crystalline form of zirconium dioxide and is typically colorless, but can be made in different colors. CZ has a hardness of 8.5-9 on the Mohs scale, which is close to diamond’s rating of 10.
Despite being a man-made material, CZ has gained popularity due to its durability, low cost, and visual similarity to diamonds. It has been the most economically significant competitor to diamonds since commercial production began in 1976. In comparison to other synthetic gemstones, CZ is also more durable than Swarovski crystals, which have a hardness rating of 6-7 on the Mohs scale.
CZ stones are known for their exceptional shine and sparkle, making them a popular choice for jewelry.
Cubic Zirconia (CZ) crystals are produced by melting powdered zirconium and zirconium dioxide together at a temperature of 4,982ºF. Once the crystal has formed, it is cut into the same shape and design as a diamond. CZ can also be created in various colors to simulate the different hues of a diamond.
Compared to other materials, CZ has a higher refractive index of 2.1, making it more reflective and sparkly than Swarovski crystals, which have a refractive index of around 1.6. This gives CZ stones a closer resemblance to diamonds.
CZ is a cost-effective alternative to diamonds, with a flawless 1 carat CZ costing as little as $10 and can go up to hundreds of dollars depending on quality. CZs are ideal for bridal and cocktail jewelry, as they offer the fire and sparkle similar to a diamond at a more affordable price.
