The crystalline form of zirconium dioxide is known as Cubic Zirconia. It is hard to determine that whether it is zirconia or a diamond because of the unbelievable similarity between diamond and zirconia and also there hardness are similar due to which people feel like buying Cubic Zirconia more plus it is cheaper than any other diamond and available in different colors as well.

It was earlier discovered in the year 1892, where it was available in the natural form of baddeleyite. Cubic Zirconia ranges from highest grade to lowest where the lowest is A and highest is 6A. The lowest quality zirconia is easily available and is as similar as high-grade cubic zirconia. The stones are often distinguished on the basis of brilliance.

Cubic Zirconia is used mostly by craftsmen and artists who use it for designs and creations. The hardness of cubic zirconia ranges about 8 on the Mohs scale where it is as similar as diamond.

“Due to its low cost and close visual likeness to diamond, cubic zirconia has remained the most gemologically and economically important diamond simulate since 1976.”- Statistics

Cubic zirconia (CZ) is the cubic crystalline form of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2). The synthesized material is hard, optically flawless and usually colorless, but may be made in a variety of different colors. Loose cubic zirconia stones are generally colorless, but many shades of colors can be added using trace elements during the manufacturing process. Clarity, or clearness, of loose cubic zirconia is a quality factor. The manufacturing process can sometimes cloud a stone, making visible imperfections. Just as with genuine diamonds, the clearer the stone is, the greater the value.

Developed countries like China, Germany, North America and Europe make the maximum use of zirconia as it is highly used in the nuclear treatment and applications. Also, Chinese products are composed of ceramics which are made with the zirconia itself and many other industries.

ORIGIN

Cubic Zirconia is formed by the synthetic treatment in the laboratory of the skull crucible where the zirconia powder is packed and fed into the cup shapes water-filled pipes. The pipe is wrapped with the induction coils having radio frequency perpendicular to pipes of copper. Calcium oxide is mixed as the stabilizer in the zirconia powder. These stones are available in different shapes and sizes.

SYNTHESIS

The RF induction coils function in a manner similar to the primary winding in a transformer. This heating method requires the introduction of small pieces of zirconium metal. The temperature is reduced in a controlled and gradual manner, resulting in the formation of flawless columnar crystals that are typically about 5 cm long by 2.5 cm wide, although they may be grown much larger. Prolonged annealing at 1400 °C is then carried out to remove any strain. The annealed crystals are then cut into gemstones. Following are some physical and chemical properties of CZ White AAA:-

CZ White AAA stones are the most popular among jewellery stores because they still offer great quality at affordable prices.

Cubic Zirconia White Quality has different grades A, AA and AAA.

High quality “Diamond Simulants” and created gems for use in jewelry making, gem collections, or just for decoration. The diamond simulants are very hard or impossible to tell from real, flawless diamonds. They are even close in hardness to a real diamond and cannot be scratched, even slightly, by any normal household item. Diamond CZ, like diamonds, can scratch glass.

Cubic zirconia and other lab created gemstones are increasing in popularity and many people now consider them to be just as beautiful like their natural counterparts.

It’s a common misconception that all CZ Stones are the same. Just like Diamonds, there are a number of Quality Levels, and there is a range of Price Points for these beautiful look-alikes. Cubic Zirconia stones are rated from A to AAAAAA. A is the Lowest Quality, while AAAAAA is the Highest Grade available. There’s a difference in the look and the price between the Lowest and Highest Grade, and there’s a market for them all. You should understand the difference to make the proper choice when selecting a CZ stone.

The Soviet-perfected skull crucible is still used today, with little variation. Water-filled copper pipes provide a cup-shaped scaffold in which the zirconia feed powder is packed, the entire apparatus being wrapped with radio frequency induction coils running perpendicular to the copper pipes. A stabilizer, typically calcium oxide, is mixed with the feed powder.

The addition of certain metal oxide dopants into the feed powder results in a variety of colors. For example:

DOPANT COLOR(S)

  • Cerium  – Yellow, Orange, Red
  • Chromium – Green
  • Neodymium – Purple
  • Erbium – Pink
  • Titanium – Golden Brown

AAAAA CZ stones are the top of the line. They are crafted by the best stone cutters and are polished just like any top rated Diamond would be. These stones are remarkably similar in appearance to diamonds and set in the same type of mountings as their diamond counterparts, it would be difficult to tell them apart. These pieces are high quality, yet affordable, choices for a shopper looking for a stunning piece without worrying about losing the entire money their wallet has.

Loose cubic zirconia stones are harder than other gemstones, but not harder than diamonds, sapphires, rubies, or chrysoberyl. Hardness is determined by Mohs’ scale of hardness. The highest grade of cubic zirconia is AAAAA, which measures 8.5 in hardness on the Mohs’ scale.

HEALING PROPERTIES AND INDUSTRIAL USES

  1. Cubic Zirconia is used in the applications of nuclear energy and application.
  2. Cubic zirconia in the powdered form is used in the chemical industries as it is highly resistant to corrosion thus it protects the rusting of materials and corrosion.
  3. Laboratory crucibles are made in the laboratory they are highly resistant to high temperature and provide protection of metals and elements.
  4. Zirconia is used in the refractory and ceramics creating as well as the casting of applications.
  5. It is used in making cans to hold the reactor fuel rods.
  6. In order to make components of airplanes, where it acts as the alloy with magnesium to make components lighter which makes the movement of airplanes faster mostly in fighter planes.
  7. Special scissors are used in big industries where it is used in cutting of materials, the reason why because the ceramics do no rust plus it is as strong as steel.
  8. In the dental implants, they are used in forming components as they do not rust while in constant contact with water.

SHAPE CHART

The shape of a diamond refers to its physical form and each diamond shape is different. The contours and outlines of a diamond have a significant impact on its appearance. They possess their own unique characteristics. This element will have an impact on the appearance of the diamond, even if it is not a part of the 4 C’s of diamonds. Each of these diamond shape is cut to different specifications, and because of that they reflect light differently, giving each shape a unique luster and brilliance. At Decent Stones we offer the most popular diamond shapes
